Alexander Zverev continues to produce on the courts of
Roland Garros at the
French Open after a comprehensive triumph over
Kei Nishikori to reach the quarter-finals.
Zverev who will now face the Spaniard, Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina was too good for Nishikori in a game that many had earmarked for the usual standard five sets albeit it ended like their last two ties, a comfortable win 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.
Zverev did not let Nishikori settle at all in the early exchanges going 3-0 up with a break and no reply giving the Japanese ace a potentially upward climb early on.
The latter finally got a game on the board holding his serve with superb defence as he hugged the baseline and he pinched a break after a double fault followed by a forehand error.
The holds of serve continued but Zverev was first towards the first set at 5-4 up as he looked to attack the Nishikori serve.
He duked it out with Nishikori on the drop sets before slicing it down the line to bring up set point which he claimed.
This positive mindset continued for Zverev as he went a break up in the second set. He saved two break points and made it five games in a row to go 3-0 up.
It was Zverev himself who took a double break and at 4-0 up as he headed towards a two set lead.
A 40-0 hold saw Zverev go one away but it wasn't a so called 'bagel' set with Nishikori holding serve but still Zverev was set to serve for 2-0 which he sealed.
Nishikori continued to look dejected as Zverev took another break at 1-0 which was further consolidated and he looked to head towards the finishing line by taking a double break with a stunning forehand which Nishikori could not defend.
But he couldn't consolidate as his forehand went just out which allowed Nishikori the chance to get it back to 3-2.
It was Nishikori's time to do the same as Zverev brought up a chance to restore the double break but he smashed it into the net restoring deuce.
The German restored this chance after a superb exchange at the net as Zverev flew around the court and the back and forth from deuce to advantage continued from there until Zverev sealed it.
A swift hold saw Zverev go one away from a three set victory. Nishikori seemingly had no answers and Zverev brought up three match points which he sealed first time.
