Carlos Alcaraz will face Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals of the 2023 US Open.
Defending champion Alcaraz will take on twelfth seed Zverev on Arthur Ashe today, Tuesday, September 6. The Spaniard has dominated most of his matches so far, having dropped only one set throughout the tournament, this being in his third-round clash with Dan Evans.
In his Round of 16 match against Matteo Arnaldi, the defending champion was on good form, sweeping past the Italian player 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. He won 78% of his first serve points and hit 31 winners in comparison to 22 unforced errors.
Meanwhile, Zverev has undergone more of a struggle to get to this stage in the tournament. He flew through his first-round match against Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, but went on to drop one set each in his matches against Daniel Altmaier and nineteenth seed Grigor Dimitrov.

Alcaraz better rested than Zverev

However, Zverev's most grueling task came in the form of his Round of 16 match against sixth seed Jannik Sinner. The German player battled through the longest match of his career at four hours and 41 minutes as the Italian took him to five sets until Zverev eventually emerged victorious 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Therefore, it is likely that Alcaraz will have more energy to attack and defend against the grit and determination of his opponent, which could give him the edge if the match becomes a close call.
This could end up being the case, as Zverev's stats from his previous round are fairly well-matched against Alcaraz's. The 26-year-old won 70% of his first serve points, firing off 16 aces. Overall, he hit 56 winners but committed 46 unforced errors, which is a lot more than his upcoming opponent did in his match, albeit Alcaraz's round was much shorter.
Moreover, the 26-year-old leads their head-to-head 3-2, although Alcaraz won their most recent match at the Madrid Open earlier this year.
Nevertheless, the pair haven't faced each other on hard courts in a couple of years, prior to Alcaraz's breakthrough. This means that although Zverev won on the surface back then, it is likely that this quarter-final match will see a reversal.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in four sets.
