Novak Djokovic has laid down his challenge to Carlos Alcaraz in terms of the US Open singing stakes after he burst out in song during his on-court interview.
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic had an unusual way of celebrating his quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz at the last Grand Slam of the year in New York. The Serb dominated the match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to extend his head-to-head lead over the American to 8-0.
Djokovic will go on to face rising talent Ben Shelton in the semi-finals, while talk of another final between the 36-year-old and his young rival Alcaraz only gets louder.
The two have already faced each other in two separate finals over recent months. They battled against each other in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon in July, where Alcaraz usurped seven-time SW19 champion Djokovic to take his second major title.
They then played each other in the Cincinnati Open final, just a couple of weeks before the start of the US Open. The match was a grueling one, lasting well over three hours to become the longest Best of Three ATP Masters 1000 final in history. It was Djokovic who emerged victorious there, winning the title 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4).
Therefore, many are excited at the prospect of seeing the pair battle it out again at Flushing Meadows. However, while it still remains to be seen if this highly-anticipated match will actually happen, Djokovic has started up somewhat of a singing rivalry with Alcaraz after both players gave renditions of popular songs in their on-court interviews.
Alcaraz showed off his singing abilities earlier in the tournament. The Spaniard was expressing his gratitude at Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra being in the stands to watch his match. Following this, Alcaraz was asked to sing some of Yatra's music, leading him to give a brief rendition of his song Vagabundo.
Meanwhile, Djokovic did not wait for a request to start singing after his match. In fact, he took the microphone off Rennae Stubbs as she was asking him a question to entertain the crowd with a rendition of (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) by New York hip-hop group The Beastie Boys.
The song was a hit with the American crowd, and he even got them singing along.
