The quarter-finals continue at the US Open today, Wednesday, September 6, at the USTA Bille Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, and Daniil Medvedev.
Top seed Alcaraz will take on twelfth seed Zverev in the last match of the day on Arthur Ashe. The Spaniard has only dropped one set throughout the tournament so far, in his third-round match against Dan Evans.
In his Round of 16 match against Matteo Arnaldi, the defending champion looked to be on good form, sweeping past the Italian player 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Zverev has had to endure a bit more of a battle to get to this stage in the tournament. He won his first-round match against Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, but then dropped one set each in his matches against Daniel Altmaier and nineteenth seed Grigor Dimitrov.
However, the most grueling match he has played so far was his Round of 16 match against sixth seed Jannik Sinner. The German player fought through the longest match of his career so far at four hours and 41 minutes, battling the Italian across five sets until he eventually emerged victorious 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
This will mean that Alcaraz is more well-rested going into their clash, but it also proves how far Zverev's grit and determination can take him in matches. In fact, the 26-year-old leads their head-to-head 3-2, although Alcaraz won their most recent match at the Madrid Open earlier this year.
They have only faced each other once on outdoor hard courts, with Zverev taking the victory there, but this was two years ago, before the 20-year-old two-time Grand Slam champion had really come into his own.
Starting out the day on Arthur Ashe, second seed and soon-to-be World No. 1 Sabalenka will take on twenty-third seed Qinwen Zheng, who is making her Grand Slam quarter-final debut.
Sabalenka has been a dominant force throughout the New York major and is yet to drop a single set. In her last two matches - against Clara Burel and Daria Kasatkina - she only lost one game in the opening set and moved to the quarter-finals with ease after defeating thirteenth seed Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Zheng took everyone by surprise when she dominated her match against fifth seed and last year's US Open runner-up Ons Jabeur. The pair met in the Round of 16, where Zheng won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, showing she is capable of defeating some of the most highly-ranked players. This comes after a successful season for the Chinese player in which she won her first WTA title at the 2023 Palermo Ladies Open.
This will be the first time that Sabalenka and Zheng have faced each other, and it will be interesting to see how the two big hitters match up. However, many are predicting that Sabalenka's consistency and more solid serve will see her through to the semi-finals.
Following the Sabalenka-Zheng match will be a clash between third seed Daniil Medvedev and eighth seed Andrey Rublev. This will be particularly interesting as the two Russians are good friends off the court. Rublev recently spoke of how he has known Medvedev since he was about six years old and is the godfather of the World No. 3's daughter.
Nevertheless, the two have faced each other on the court seven times before, with Medvedev leading their head-to-head 5-2. They last met on an outdoor hard court earlier this year in the finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, with the 27-year-old winning his fifth victory over Rublev 6-2, 6-2.
At the US Open, Medvedev has moved through his matches fairly straightforwardly, although he lost his first set against thirteenth seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round and lost a tiebreak against Christopher O'Connell in the second round.
Meanwhile, Rublev has lost one set in all of his matches from the second round onwards, but has still pulled through each time and is yet to go to five sets. In the Round of 16, he defeated Jack Draper 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
After this, reigning Wimbledon champion and ninth seed Marketa Vondrousova will be up against seventeenth seed and home player Madison Keys.
Keys pulled off a shock victory against her compatriot and World No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the Round of 16, losing just one game in the opening set and dominating the match to win 6-1, 6-3. She will be hoping to re-live the achievements of six years ago when she finished as runner-up at the 2017 US Open.
On the other hand, while Vondrousova has said that she is not pressuring herself to win the American Slam after her surprise victory at the SW19 in July, her potential for a second major title is becoming more of a possibility with each round. So far, she has only dropped one set during her run at Flushing Meadows, this being in the fourth round against American player Peyton Stearns.
This will be the two players' first meeting. Although Vondrousova is the higher-ranked player of the two, the home crowd will be firmly backing Keys and it has also emerged that the Czech player is dealing with arm issues, meaning the match could be a close call.
