The second day of the
ATP Finals was clouded by two tragedies that shocked Turin, following the passing of two men due to illness, within a short difference in time. Both incidents occurred separately, with one victim being a 70-year-old man and the other a 78-year-old man.
The first individual received emergency care after feeling unwell in the morning in front of the Fan Village at Piazza d’Armi, near the Inalpi Arena where the tournament stars have been playing. The second incident occurred directly inside the venue, as the fan collapsed during the match between Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti.
Both fans were urgently transported to the Molinette Hospital in critical condition, but despite resuscitation attempts, they passed away shortly after their respective admissions, as reported by
Gazzetta Italia, which was present amidst the tournament.
Group leads established: Fritz and Sinner secure wins on Day Two
Meanwhile, the Day Two of the ATP Finals proceeded normally. In the first session of the day, Taylor Fritz defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-3 without incident. The Italian was the last player to qualify for the tournament—following the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic—and arrived in Turin only one day before the start of the tournament.
Separately, the night session saw the debut of defending champion Jannik Sinner, who was received with ovations by the Turin crowd. The World No. 1 capitalized on the physical problems of his opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime to take the victory 7-5, 6-1 and quickly seize the lead in the Bjorn Borg Group.
Action will resume this Wednesday in Turin, where Carlos Alcaraz will face Taylor Fritz in a bid to take the lead of the Jimmy Connors Group, and where the winner will have one foot in the semi-finals—pending confirmation of subsequent results. Additionally, Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti will compete to stay alive in the group and still cling to the possibility of potentially advancing to the semi-finals.
