of 16 of the WTA 500 Internationaux de Strasbourg begins with intriguing duels, including
the defending champion Elina Svitolina. The French tournament, played on clay
courts, serves as the final stop before the French Open.
The
tournament, which upgraded from WTA 250 status in previous years, boasts a
history of champions like Svitolina (2-time winner), Angelique Kerber, Barbora
Krejcikova, Caroline Garcia, and Maria Sharapova. With the first round
completed, Tuesday, May 21, will feature four Round of 16 matches.
Top Seeds and Former Champions Headline Round of 16
The day's
first match features 5th seed Liudmila Samsonova (No. 8) against Leylah
Fernandez (No. 33). The former US Open finalist defeated Anastasia Potapova in
the opening round but hasn't secured consecutive victories since the Doha Open
in February. Notably, she beat Samsonova en route to the quarter-finals in
Doha. This time, the Russian arrives with confidence after a tight three-set
win over 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova (No. 26) in her opening
match.

Next up,
local favorite Clara Burel (No. 43) will challenge 2-time champion Svitolina
(No. 17). The Ukrainian narrowly missed out in her Rome Open fourth-round match
against Aryna Sabalenka (No. 2), losing in a third-set tie-break but displaying
a high level of play.
Svitolina
is the heavy favorite against Burel, who will rely on home crowd support to
spring an upset, especially after defeating former world No. 1 Karolina
Pliskova (No. 51) in the first round.
In the
afternoon, American Danielle Collins (No. 12) takes center stage. Collins has
won 19 of her last 21 matches, including titles at the Miami Open and
Charleston Open. One of the Tour’s in-form players, Collins currently sits 4th
in the WTA Race and aims to maintain her confidence heading into Roland Garros.
She faces Czech Katerina Siniakova (No. 34), who recently won the WTA 125
Catalonia Open. Collins leads their head-to-head 2-1, though they have never
met on clay.
The day
concludes with another local hope, Fiona Ferro (No. 142), who faces Ukrainian
Anhelina Kalinina (No. 56). Ferro, a wild card entry, is preparing for Roland
Garros, where she also received a wild card. The Frenchwoman opened with a win
over Erika Andreeva (No. 101), while Kalinina overcame the 2018 champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (No. 22).

- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth.
