In our
Daily Dose of Social Media, we take a look back at some of the moments you may have missed from the last 24 hours from the tennis world both on court and off court including entertainment and viral moments.
We lead with
Belinda Bencic which was less than entertainment albeit on court it was as she saw off Yuliia Starodubtseva in Ningbo but she received vile abuse on leaving the court which she showcased on social media.
Aryna Sabalenka visited Hong Kong and showed off her trip alongside fellow WTA star
Anna Kalinskaya.
Marta Kostyuk was in a reflective mood as her season heads towards its conclusion with the Ukrainian having one of her best years yet.
Valentin Vacherot is followed around on his day of winning the Shanghai Masters while Francisco Cerundolo shows off infinite aura as he seals the UTS Hong Kong title on Wednesday. This in turn sees him directly admitted to the Grand Final in London which will take place later this year. The main moments are all below in our Daily Dose of Social Media.
Bencic subject to vile threats
Belinda Bencic has been the latest to share the vile side of social media in her direct messages with the Swiss ace sent rape threats and called a prostitute including by people who themselves have kids as she prevailed in a three hour marathon.
Bencic saw off Yullia Starodubtseva at the Ningbo Open to reach the Quarter-Finals. Last week, she reached the Last 16 at the Wuhan Open losing to Iga Swiatek. Bencic has had a superb comeback season making the Australian Open semi-finals and claiming the Abu Dhabi Open.
She posted consistently good results in the Asian hard court swing and advanced to the Quarter-Finals but that wasn't enough to stop the tide of abuse. She got off court after a three hour thriller to abuse from mainly betters or gamblers or lose.
"No play tennis please loserrrrr!" a user wrote in her direct message. "This is the nicest one I got today. Thank you @madchen_alexa Nice influencer profile btw"
While others were more disgusting including threats or rape and calling her a prostitute. A problem often highlighted by players including Eva Lys and Linda Noskova who share when they are abused in direct messages and Bencic is the latest.
Sabalenka with help from Kalinskaya stuns in Hong Kong
Aryna Sabalenka is taking this week off the tour and won't play in Osaka and Ningbo but is remaining in Asia taking in an exhibition which also featured Anna Kalinskaya and Andre Agassi.
Sabalenka posted what is known as a 'photo dump' on her social media of moments from the trip which included as ever lots of glamourous shots from the World No.1.
As well as featuring Anna Kalinskaya with the pair together on the trip to play the exhibition. "Many meals and memories later, thank you Hong Kong," she wrote on Instagram.
Kostyuk shares positivity as season heads towards conclusion
Marta Kostyuk shared positivity as her season heads towards its conclusion. Kostyuk lost out to Karolina Muchova in the first round in Wuhan last week and also the same could be said in doubles with Olga Danilovic in a 7-5, 6-3 loss.
Kostyuk has had one of the best seasons of her life reaching three WTA 1000 Quarter-Finals and a US Open fourth round and continues to get more and more consistent year on year. A point she touched on during a look back on the season.
"This season has been one of the most consistent and meaningful in my career. It wasn’t easy, but I kept showing up and doing the work, no matter what was happening around me. There were weeks when I didn’t even know if I’d be able to play, and moments that tested me in every possible way. But somehow, we always found a way through, and that’s thanks to the people around me. My team and everyone close to me kept me grounded and believed in me when I couldn’t. That kind of support gives you strength in ways words can’t describe. And it reminded me of something simple:
"it’s not about how many times you fall, but how many times you find the courage to rise again. This year also made me look at tennis differently. It’s such a self-centered world: everything revolves around you, your body, your goals, and your mindset. But once I saw it for what it is, something shifted. I started to notice more, to find meaning beyond results, and to appreciate the journey itself. The tour keeps getting tougher every year: more demanding, more matches, and more travel. So now, balance means everything. It’s about protecting my body, my energy, and building something that lasts. There were steps forward and back, big ones and small, but they were all part of the same road. And in the end, that’s what it’s all about: not the finish line, but the path you take to get there.
Behind the scenes with shock winner
Valentin Vacherot was one of the biggest shocks of the end of the season as he scooped the Shanghai Masters last week seeing off his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.
The Shanghai Masters social media team gave a different spin on it following the Monegasque king on route to his title and after including with his cousin as well as his girlfriend.
Insane aura from Francisco Cerundolo
Away from the main tour there was more tennis action as Francisco Cerundolo displayed incredible aura as he won the UTS Hong Kong title as the road to the UTS Grand Final in London continues.
In the all-important final, Cerundolo defeated America’s Jenson Brooksby with a score of 20-5, 10-12, 15-9, 17-7.
In the contest, Cerundolo dominated the first and fourth quarters, which proved enough
to lift the title. With that win, Cerundolo has now joined the list of elite
players who have qualified for the UTS Grand Final in London, which is the last
stage of the UTS Tour.
