Coco Gauff has confirmed that she will not participate in the San Diego Open after her dream run at the
US Open.
19-year-old Gauff achieved her first Grand Slam title yesterday, Saturday, September 9, when she was crowned the women's singles champion at Flushing Meadows. The sixth seed defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
This came after a hugely successful summer on the North American swing. Gauff won both the WTA 500 DC Open title and lifted the trophy at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open. This was a great comeback for the World No. 6 after being defeated by Sofia Kenin in the first round of Wimbledon back in July.
Gauff withdraws from San Diego
The San Diego Open begins immediately after the end of the US Open, with the Round of 32 getting underway on Monday, September 11. The WTA 500 event features some highly-ranked players, including Jelena Ostapenko, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Some top 10 players will also be there and the top three seeds are World No. 8 Maria Sakkari, World No. 7 Carolina Garcia, and world No. 5 Ons Jabeur.
However, the tournament will not feature Gauff, who was originally scheduled to play there. This is because the American was playing until this Saturday and it would be a lot for any athlete to compete immediately after two weeks of grueling tennis at a major.
Gauff reached the quarter-finals in San Diego last year before being ousted by Iga Swiatek. In doubles, she won the title with partner Jessica Pegula, defeating Giuliana Olmos and Gabriela Dabrowski in the final.
Gauff is expected to return at the 2023 Guadalajara Open, which she will enter as the top-ranked American on the WTA Tour. The tournament will take place from September 17-23 and will feature the likes of Swiatek, Pegula, and Elena Rybakina.
