With the
Madrid Open only a few weeks away, the first main draw wildcards have been confirmed with a quartet of well-known names including a duo who have recently jousted in the media leading the way in
Simona Halep and
Caroline Wozniacki.
Halep was handed a wildcard for the Madrid Open. Also whilst not being confirmed yet by the tournament seems to be playing Rouen in the coming weeks. She sparked a war of words with Wozniacki in Miami which saw the Dane lament the immediate wildcard handed to her.
Wozniacki saw hypocrisy in the fact that Halep called out Maria Sharapova for taking wildcards after doping.
But that she didn't follow the same and should've started from the bottom. Halep's retort was that she wasn't caught doping, despite the fact she had a suspension of nine months in the end.
But this war of words continued post Miami and two friends suddenly became enemies overnight due to one viewpoint. They will both play though starting April 22. They are joined by the returning
Kei Nishikori and Martin Landaluce.
Rafael Nadal won't be a recipient of a wildcard. This is due to him using his protected ranking to enter. So he is not part of this first batch of wildcards utilised. Others that could receive them include Emma Raducanu for instance.
