Amanda Anisimova has stated that she is surprised to see her own performance
in the ongoing
Canadian Open. The 22-year-old has been a surprise package in
the ongoing competition where she has booked her place in the final of the
mega-event.
While on her
way to the final, she produced some remarkable results. In the second-round, she
defeated world number 12 Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in straight sets with a score
of 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinal, the New Jersey-born perhaps caused the tournament's biggest upset as she defeated world number three Belarus’ Aryna
Sabalenka in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
In the
semifinals, Anisimova got the better of world number 15 America’s Emma Navarro with
a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. She is now set to face world number 6 Jessica Pegula in
the grand finale. She booked her place in the final Diana Shnaider in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Anisimova,
while talking to Puntodebreak, expressed excitement about playing her
first-ever WTA 1000 event final. The 22-year-old, who had a good outing in the
Citi Open as well where she was knocked out of the competition after losing in
the quarterfinal, went on to state that she herself has been surprised how well
she has managed to play in the competition where some of the best players in women’s
tennis.
"I'm
super happy,” she said. “This is a great achievement for me, something I've
worked very hard for. Honestly, I'm very happy with my week, I'm quite
surprised by how well it has gone so far. Nevertheless, I want more and hope to
perform well in the final."
Anisimova
also went on to explain her objectives going forward where she wants to win. "I
think it would be very difficult to finish my career without achieving those
goals, so I want to give it my all and hope to achieve it in the coming years.
I just know that I give my best effort, that's all I can do, give my best. If
it doesn't happen, at least I'll know I did everything I could."
