Polish teenager Iga Swiatek achieved one of her dreams last week as she captured her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. Upon returning to Poland, the 19-year old was honored by President Andrzej Duda as he presented her with the Golden Cross of Merit on Friday.
This award was given to her as recognition for a remarkable sporting achievement, as Swiatek defeated Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the final to become the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title.
“It is a very important moment [Roland Garros victory], also for the whole of Polish sport," stressed President Duda. "This is a historical event."
He went on to elaborate that her success in tennis also held great significance, as it promoted national pride.
"This is a sign of our pride, a sign of your great victory," the President added. It is also a sign of hope for the future, and I hope that this ceremony opens a new series of successive victories and a whole series of great satisfaction for you - both personal, as well as for all of us, the whole country."
Swiatek was not the only recipient of an award as her father, Tomasz Swiatek, was also honored by President Dude. He was awarded with the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
