Elena-Gabriela Ruse will head into the top 150 for the first time this week after claiming an unlikely triumph at the WTA 250, the
Hamburg European Open coming from qualifying to see off Andrea Petkovic in the final.
In doing so though, she becomes the 11th first time winner on the WTA Tour in 2021 showing the strength and depth and also the non dominance of one particular player.
Starting with Clara Tauson in Lyon, familar faces such as Sara Sorribes Tormo (Guadalajara),
Leylah Fernandez (Monterrey), Veronika Kudermetova (Charleston 500) started this wave.
This then saw
Paula Badosa and
Barbora Krejcikova who broke new ground on clay join the list back to back in Belgrade and Strasbourg before Liudmila Samsonova joined proceedings in Berlin before her successful grass season.
As well as Maria Camila Osorio Serrano who like Badosa had a successful season on clay and won in Bogota. Astra Sharma also added her name to the list in Charleston.
Breaking new ground epitomised
Ons Jabeur's run to Birmingham and Rusu now becomes the latest name on this list. Can it lead to further success for the former highest ranked no.159?
