Sorribes Tormo stuns Osaka to give Spain 1-0 lead over Japan

Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated Naomi Osaka in the first match of the Fed Cup tie between Spain and Japan which is held in Murcia, Spain.

Fifth-Seeded Spain had a right to choose a surface on which their first Fed Cup tie against Japan is going to be played. The Spanish team chose clay what seemed to be a good decision to battle past a team around the world no. 10, Naomi Osaka.

In the first matchup of the tie, Sara Sorrbies Tormo faced the 2018 US Open champion, Naomi Osaka. The Spaniard felt huge support from the home crowd as she started the match perfectly. World number 78 in the WTA Ranking was almost unstoppable in the first set when she outplayed the Japanese player 6-0 after just 28 minutes.

Osaka stepped up her game in the second set when she got an early 2-0 lead. However, Sara Sorribes Tormo soon tied the score. Osaka led got another lead when the scoreboard was showing 3-2 for Japan. But Sorribes Tormo turned into unstoppable mode once again. She managed to win 4 games in a row to win the second set 6-3.

Spain leads 1-0 against Japan after the first matchup of qualifying tie. In the second match, Carla Suarez Navarro will be facing Misaki Doi.
