Iga Swiatek thanked the fans in Cancun after she emerged victorious from a difficult week at the 2023
WTA Finals, while also praising her opponent in the final
Jessica Pegula.
The Polish player soared to victory at the 2023 WTA Finals, defeating all three of her Group Stage opponents - Marketa Vondrousova, Coco Gauff, and Ons Jabeur - before ousting top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final without dropping a set.
She then continued this success in the final, where she downed World No. 5 Pegula 6-1, 6-0. In doing so, Swiatek re-claimed her place at the top of the WTA Ranking and secured her spot as the year-end No. 1 for the second consecutive year.

However, the week was far from easy for the players, with construction work on the stadium remaining unfinished until the day before the tournament began. Then, once players could access the Estadio Paradisus, several complained of the bad ball bounce on the courts and said they felt unsafe in the venue.
Following this, bad weather caused multiple matches to be delayed and pushed the final back by a whole day. After her win, Swiatek thanked the fans in Cancun for their support amid the difficult situation.
"Thank you, guys, for shouting our names and everything, even though this week wasn't easy, you really made it special for us," she said.
Moreover, the 22-year-old also had kind words for her opponent and tournament runner-up Pegula, saying that she hoped to play many more finals against the American in the future.
Swiatek praises Pegula and thanks family
"Jesse[Jessica Pegula], I wanted to congratulate you for the whole season and for your consistency throughout. Hopefully, we both progress and play many more finals together and your team as well," Swiatek continued.
Later in the speech, Swiatek thanked her family and her team for their support throughout the season.
"I want to thank my family and my team. It's not often when my dad is here, so thanks for coming and supporting me. The team that has been with me for the whole season, we've had many ups and downs, but this is for sure an up. And we'll for sure have many more if we keep working like that," she added.
