Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic is closing in
on yet another milestone after his recent success.
The 36-year-old defeated Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the
final of the
Paris Masters in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
With that win, Djokovic is almost certain to finish the year
as the number one player in the world which means that he is now getting closer
to becoming the first player in the history of men’s singles tennis to stay at
the helm for 400 weeks.
The Belgrade-born has recently started his 398th
week as the number one player in the rankings and a win in a round-robin match
in the
ATP Finals will be enough for him to achieve the milestone.
Djokovic is often regarded as the greatest player in the history
of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam
titles.
In 2023, the current world number one had a fabulous year where
he ended up winning three out of four major titles.
His only defeat in a Grand Slam this year came in the final at
Wimbledon where he lost to Spain’s young sensation Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set
thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
