Alexander Zverev will be the opponent of Jannik Sinner in the Vienna Open final, after defeating the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. The German reaches the 40th final of his career and his 4th of the season, where he will challenge the World No. 2 in a duel between former champions in the Austrian capital.
The Italian comfortably commanded the head-to-head (H2H) 3-1—winning the last three matches, including the 2024 Vienna quarterfinals—their only previous duel on hard courts. However, this time Zverev found solutions to his opponent's game and got revenge on Musetti. It is also his 57th victory against a Top 10 rival and his third of the season.
Musetti came in with high aspirations, especially as he is in a tight battle to secure a spot in the ATP Finals. With only one more tournament ahead, he managed to extend his lead over the 9th spot (Felix Auger-Aliassime) to 440 points, which allows him to end the week with some tranquility, although his qualification for Turin is still not secure.
Zverev had rested in the quarter-final round after Tallon Griekspoor withdrew before their quarter-final match. The German was impeccable on his serve this time, conceding no break points to his opponent—while taking 2/4 opportunities he created throughout the match.

Impeccable serving powers Zverev to crucial first-set break

The beginning was especially balanced, with both players comfortably defending their service games. While Musetti won 82% of points on his first serve, Zverev was even better with a notable 89% of points won on his first serve. Towards 3-3, both had barely scored points on the return, until the first break chance of the match came in the 7th game and Zverev took the lead.
The German did not need to do much more on the return and relied on impeccable service games to close the set 6-4, totaling 11 winners against 7 for Musetti, and winning 80% of total service points, compared to only 68% for Musetti.

Zverev close out straight-sets victory

With the advantage on Zverev's side, things did not change much in the second set, as both players held serve comfortably. For a good part of the set, there were no break opportunities for either player—just a single deuce in the 7th game when Musetti was serving—but it was not enough for Zverev to genuinely threaten his rival's serve.
However, the final moments were entirely for the German 3-time Grand Slam runner-up. Zverev faced a tricky service game when he was at 4-5, 15-30 in the second set, but from there, he went on a good run of points—winning 11 of the next 14 points. A single break opportunity at 5-5 was enough for 'Sascha' to take the lead and close out the victory with his service game, 6-4, 7-5, to return to his fourth final of the season.
