Several tennis superstars experienced a change in position in the ATP Race to Turin following the conclusion of the Madrid Open, with the first ATP Masters 1000 event on clay in 2022 producing familiar yet surprising results.
World No.1 Novak Djokovic finally seemed to find his form, after playing in a handful of tournaments this year due to his vaccine status. The Serbian made a semifinal appearance in Madrid last week, losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. However, his strong run enabled him to move up a whooping 69 positions in the Race to Turin, due to the fact that he had barely played all season.
Conversely, Alcaraz continued his ascent up the ATP rankings, reaching a career high of World No.6 and gaining 1,000 points after his victory in Madrid. This allowed him to overtake Stefanos Tsitsipas for No.2 on the table, putting him just 70 points behind Rafael Nadal, who retained his top spot.
Other notable movers were Alexander Zverev, who finished runner-up in Madrid and climbed up four spots to No.8 in the race, and Andrey Rublev, who moved up two positions to reach the No.4 spot on the table.
