Daniil Medvedev has become the third player to qualify for the Nitto
ATP Finals after his success at the
US Open.
World No. 3 Medvedev qualified for the prestigious tournament in Turin where the top 8 players play against each other after his success at the US Open.
In the Round of 16, the 27-year-old defeated thirteenth seed Alex de Minaur in four sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to progress to the quarter-finals. The Russian will be hoping for a repeat of the 2021 New York major, where he won his first and only Grand Slam title to date.
Medvedev makes fifth consecutive ATP Finals
Regardless of his end result at this year's US Open, Medvedev's place has been confirmed at the Nitto ATP Finals for the fifth consecutive year. He has a good history at the tournament, having won the title in 2020 and made the final in 2021.
This comes off the back of a successful season for the third seed. He has lifted five ATP trophies in 2023, including in Dubai, Doha, and Rotterdam. However, his most impressive accolades this year are his two ATP Masters 1000 titles, won on the clay courts at the Rome Open and the hard courts at the Miami Open.
Two other players have already been confirmed for the ATP Tour's season-ending championship, those being the two top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Regarding his qualification, Medvedev said:
"After Rome you kind of know I'm probably there. It's just nice to have it official, to kind of know. I can just stay at home and still go to Turin, which is very close from me. Would be a nice trip.
"That's a nice feeling to be there that early, probably together with Carlos and Novak. I think that's only second time I’ve qualified that early… Happy to be there fifth time in a row, and hopefully many more."
