Jelena Ostapenko has long banged the drum against electronic line calling and Hawkeye in tennis and being clear that it can make a mistake and case and point was
Caroline Garcia against Naomi Osaka at the
Qatar Open.
After Osaka winning through, a dodgy line-call was the least of Garcia's worries but it raised a smile from both the player and the umpire. Garcia began her service motion, but halted it halfway through only to be called out.
She never hit the ball and it was still called out as she could only smile at the incident. The next serve was in, but she swiftly lost the point to Osaka as the match turned in the tide of the former World No.1. Linespeople are a thing of the past with Electronic Line Calling becoming more prevalent and Ostapenko in particular having meltdowns over this issue and believing calls are wrong.
Erroneous line calls during women's doubles and also during the Australian Open with Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka have been cases in point where the latter saw the Latvian say she'd never umpire one of her matches again. It didn't go that far with Garcia, but it was more of a joke reaction than her losing her cool.
