It is finally here. The 2023 French Open will begin at Roland Garros on the clay courts of Paris on Sunday 28 May with a stacked schedule to begin proceedings. This is our preview of Day One.
One of the tournament favourites in Aryna Sabalenka will be in action facing Marta Kostyuk, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Maria Sakkari and Jessica Pegula are also slated to begin their campaigns.
Sabalenka comes into this tournament off the back of a superb Madrid and a poor Rome, but with the slide slightly of Iga Swiatek will join Elena Rybakina as one of the tournament favourites.
Jessica Pegula has been the forgotten woman in this equation with the American third in the world and she will look to drag herself into the conversation. As will Greek ace, Maria Sakkari albeit she will defend a semi-final from two years ago in one of her best chances to win a Grand Slam.

Matches to watch

Aryna Sabalenka v Marta Kostyuk

Slated to begin proceedings on Court Philippe Chatrier, Sabalenka is the second seed in this tournament and will face Marta Kostyuk. The Ukrainian talent who has no love lost with the Belarusian.
This partly of course is due to the ongoing invasion of Russia into Ukraine and the part that Belarus have played in it and Kostyuk has been the most outspoken player from Ukraine about players' views and the way she has been treated throughout.
Sabalenka has also said about being hated before but there will likely be no handshake and a real urge from both sides to get the better of each other.
There is also the added caveat of Paula Badosa becoming best friends with Aryna Sabalenka last year and playing doubles with her.
This ended the friendship between Badosa and Kostyuk with the former tour best friends sharing a cold handshake in Rome.
Head to head wise, it is 1-0 to Sabalenka who won their previous encounter in Dubai last year in straight sets.

Danielle Collins v Jessica Pegula

Another top tie which was picked out of the first round which takes place on Sunday on Court Suzanne Lenglen is Danielle Collins facing Jessica Pegula.
Two top Americans and in the case of Pegula, a player who has pushed on over the past 18 months to become part of the WTA elite showing consistency.
While for Collins, partly due to endometriosis has not been consistent but has reached a Grand Slam final of course. It is also her first match since April since playing in Charleston.
But for Pegula after a run to the latter stages in Madrid, it was an early exit in Rome against Taylor Townsend so will she trip up again against a compatriot.
They have faced off twice with Pegula winning both. She won their most recent battle at the Miami Open in straight sets.

Sakkari, Tsitsipas, Rublev and Fernandez also in action

Also in action on Sunday are Stefanos Tsitsipas who will follow Sabalenka on Court Phillippe Chatrier. He faces Jiri Vesely. Alize Cornet facing Camila Giorgi and the French duo of Adrian Mannarino and Ugo Humbert end the day on the show court.
Karen Khachanov, Maria Sakkari facing Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev act as a pre cursor to Collins - Pegula.
While away from the main courts, Leylah Fernandez, Daria Kasatkina, Sebastian Korda, Anastasia Potapova, Ben Shelton and one of the home hopes from last year in Leolia Jeanjean start their campaigns.
